The demand for a transmission or just gearbox in an automobile is a consequence of the characteristics of the internal combustion engine. Engines typically operate over a range of 600 to about 7000 rpm (although this changes, and is typically less for diesel engines), while the car’s wheels rotate between 0 rpm and around 1800 rpm.

Additionally, the engine provides its greatest torque and power boosters unevenly through the rev range leading to a torque band and a power group. Frequently the greatest torque is required when the car is moving out of rest or traveling gradually, while maximum power is necessary at high rate. Therefore, a system is needed that transforms the search engine’s output so that it may provide high torque at low speeds, but also function at highway speeds with the motor still functioning within its limits. Transmissions perform this transformation.

The dynamics of a car change with speed: at low rates, acceleration is limited by the inertia of vehicular gross mass; while at maximum or cruising rates end resistance is the dominant barrier.

Many transmissions and equipment used in truck and automotive applications are included in a cast iron case, although more often aluminium is used for lower weight particularly in cars. There are normally 3 shafts: a mainshaft, a countershaft, and an idler shaft.

The mainshaft goes away from the case in both directions: the input towards the engine, along with the output towards the rear axle (on rear wheel drive cars. Front wheel drives normally have the motor and transmission mounted transversely, the differential being part of the transmission assembly.)

The rotating shaft is suspended from the main bearings, and can be divided towards the input end. In the point of the split, a pilot bearing holds the shafts together. The gears and clutches ride on the mainshaft, the gears being free to turn relative to the mainshaft except when engaged by the clutches.

A manual transmission, also called a manual gearbox, or colloquially in certain countries (e.g. the Us) as a pole shift is a form of transmission used in automobile applications. It uses a driver-operated clutch engaged and disengaged by a foot pedal (automobile) or hand lever (motorcycle), for controlling torque transfer from the motor to the transmission; and a gear selector operated by hand (automobile) or by foot (motorcycle).

A traditional 5-speed manual transmission is often the normal gear in a base-model automobile, while more expensive manual vehicles are often outfitted with a 6-speed transmission instead; other options include automatic transmissions like a classic automatic (hydraulic planetary) transmission (often a manumatic), a semi-automatic transmission, or a constantly variable transmission (CVT). The number of forward gear ratios is often expressed for automatic transmissions as well (e.g., 9-speed automatic).

Manual transmissions often include a driver-operated clutch and a movable gear stick. Most automobile manual transmissions allow the driver to pick any forward gear ratio (« gear ») at any time, but some, such as those commonly mounted on bikes and a few kinds of racing cars, only allow the driver to select the next-higher or even next-lower gear. This type of transmission is sometimes called a sequential manual transmission.

In a manual transmission, the flywheel is attached to the engine’s crankshaft and spins along with it. The clutch disk is in between the pressure plate and the flywheel, and is held contrary to the flywheel under pressure in the pressure plate. After the engine is running and the clutch is engaged (i.e., clutch pedal up), the flywheel spins the clutch plate and hence the transmission. As the clutch pedal is depressed, the throw out bearing is triggered, which causes the pressure plate to stop applying pressure to the clutch disk. This produces the clutch plate cease getting power from the engine, so that the gear can be changed without damaging the transmission. When the clutch pedal is released, the throw out bearing is deactivated, and the clutch disk is held against the flywheel, allowing it to begin receiving power from the engine.

Manual transmissions are characterized by gear ratios that are selectable by bending chosen gear pairs into the output shaft within the transmission. Oddly, many automatic transmissions comprise epicyclic (planetary) gearing controlled by brake bands and/or clutch packs to select gear ratio. Automatic transmissions that enable the driver to manually pick the current gear are known as manumatics. A manual-style transmission operated by pc is often called an automated transmission as opposed to an automatic, even though no differentiation between the two conditions need be made.

Contemporary automobile manual transmissions normally use four to six forwards gear ratios and one reverse gear, although consumer car manual transmissions are constructed with as few as two and as many as seven tools. Transmissions for heavy trucks and other heavy equipment usually have 8 to 25 gears so the transmission may provide both a wide range of gears and shut gear ratios to keep the engine running in the power band. Running aforementioned transmissions often use the same routine of shifter movement with a single or many switches to participate the next sequence of gear choice.
